I woke on time this morning but decided not to run as my knees are sore. I am hoping that a short rest may do some good. I have been experiencing some knee problems for some time. Strangely they are not sore after a long run, even Sunday's long run where I applied bit more pressure. It is after my 12K runs that I experience the most problems.

Are your 12km runs hill ones? It is the hills that get to the knees Eddie......

Smart move resting up Eddie. Maybe you need to find an alternate (flat) 12k route to chuck in every now and then.
I always find that when my knees start to get sore, it is time to get some new shoes. This seems to be at about the 700k mark for me.
Of course the other cause could just be old age ;-). I take glucosamine daily to combat wear and tear on the knees.
